Results Based Management Framework: A Brief Primer
Compiled by J. Smith Abbott, CMgr FCMI

RBM refers to a management philosophy and approach and set of tools designed to improve project and programme design, management
effectiveness, monitoring, reporting and accountability of achievement of results.  In the broadest terms, RBM is a four-step methodology in which
practitioners define the expected results, monitor and measure progress, report on results achieved and/or the progress of the same and finally,
learn and adjust project structure to derive refined expected results (Figure 1).  The Results Frameworks is therefore, the program logic that explains
how the development objective is to be achieved, including causal relationships and underlying assumptions. Results are achieved by aggregating
planned interventions along a Results Chain.  The Results Chain is the causal sequence for a development intervention that stipulates the necessary
sequence to achieve desired objectives beginning with inputs, moving through activities and outputs, and culminating in outcomes, impacts, and
feedback.
